Tragedy struck the North Palm Beach County Airport on Wednesday afternoon, where two men lost their lives following the crash of a small plane into a nearby lake. According to FOX13 News, the men were found by rescuers and quickly transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The identities of the victims have not been released as investigators work to understand what led to this fatal incident.
Officials indicated the plane, identified as a Piper PA28, had taken off from the local airstrip at approximately 2 p.m. before meeting its ill-fated end in a marsh area at the end of the runway. The Tampa Bay Times reported the aircraft crashed shortly after departure, precipitating the rapid response from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue teams.
Sarah Taylor Sulick, a spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), was on hand to confirm the details of the crash location and plane model. In a statement obtained by Sun Sentinel, Sulick mentioned the plane went down into a muddy lake, which necessitated a search and rescue effort to retrieve the victims. As of now, the NTSB has taken charge of the investigation, intent on piecing together the events that culminated in this disaster.
