An hour later, the night's silence was shattered once again, this time in West Philadelphia. A 30-year-old man was found in a pool of blood, suffering from a leg wound, at the intersection of Hirst and Arch streets. According to NBC Philadelphia, the victim was "in and out of consciousness" and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remained in critical condition. The grim markers of violence, 11 shell casings from two different firearms including rifle rounds, littered the ground, a testament to the chaos that had unfolded.
Authorities have been working to piece together the events leading up to these shootings. In the case of the West Philadelphia incident, "There was a large amount of blood on the scene from the victim, so, the victim did lose a lot of blood," said Chief Inspector Scott Small in a statement obtained by NBC Philadelphia. Despite the clarity of violence's aftermath, the investigation is hampered by an absence of both suspect and motive.
Surveillance technology, often a silent witness to urban tragedy, may yield evidence. Cameras strewn about a block away from each of the incident sites could provide investigators with needful insight. "Investigators are hoping this footage could provide some insight onto what happened," Small conveyed to media outlets. In an unrelated incident, a 32-year-old man walked into a Philadelphia hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg early Tuesday, but officials were unsure of the location of this shooting. This man, unlike the others, was listed in stable condition.
As the City of Brotherly Love confronts the reality of these shootings, the police continue their investigations, combing through footage and calling on the public for any information that might lead to clarity — and to justice for the victims entangled in the city's latest chapter of gun violence.
