Two women found themselves on the wrong side of the law after stepping into a Butte County neighborhood that was off-limits due to the ongoing Park Fire, as reported by FOX40. The Butte County Sheriff's Office identified the individuals as Delmara Apel, 41, and Amy Jackson, 43, who were placed under arrest on Monday when discovered in the restricted area near Chico.
Deputies were clued into the presence of the women after an alert of potential looters on Sycamore Valley Road and located a truck at a roadblock with three inside, the blockade was meant to prevent entry into the evacuated Cohasset community. Upon being located approximately half a mile from the truck, Apel and Jackson were detained and charged with unlawful entry into the evacuation zone, during the booking process at Butte County Main Jail, a body scan revealed methamphetamine and a glass pipe on Apel's person.
The escalating Park Fire prompted mandatory evacuations for several areas which remain in effect, including Cohasset which is just northeast of Chico, CBS News Sacramento reported on Tuesday. The fire, believed to be a result of suspected arson, has ballooned into one of the five largest conflagrations the state has witnessed, impacting multiple counties, and leading to the arrest of at least one individual.
According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, deputies were able to pinpoint the truck, unfortunately the two women, Apel and Jackson, had already vacated the vehicle and ventured into the off-limits zone, they were then apprehended about a half mile from the roadblock that had been put in place, and in addition to the charges related to the evacuation zone, Apel now faces an extra charge for smuggling meth into jail.
