Exploring the vast lands of Texas might now be a cleaner, greener experience. Michael Chamberlain of TxDOT took it upon himself to traverse the state in an all-electric vehicle (EV), clocking over 8,300 miles and stopping by 21 metropolitan planning organizations, as per a report from TxDOT. This eco-friendly adventure served a dual purpose: experiencing the nuances of EV travel and scoping out future charging spots across Texas.

As the state forges ahead with its Texas EV Infrastructure Plan, initiated last spring, the focus is on constructing a network of charging stations. These stations are crucial for imbuing EV drivers with the assurance that they can travel without worries about distance or the fickle whims of weather. "I also visited many of our future EV charging sites along the way," Chamberlain shared, offering insights first-hand. Despite a nationwide deceleration in EV sales, attributed by consumers to insufficient charging solutions, Texas sees the opposite, with statistics indicating a significant uptick in EV adoption.

In his journey, Chamberlain wasn't just a lone traveler; he was a herald of technological change, offering demonstrations and shedding light on the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program to local communities, according to TxDOT. His efforts were aimed at sparking engagement and getting plans in motion for phase two of the charging infrastructure expansion, gearing up to cater to areas beyond the interstates.

As of now, the Lonestar State is speckled with 3,860 charging locations. TxDOT is actively implementing phase one of their plan, which will pepper fast charging stations every 50 miles alongside interstate highways. "When the NEVI network is complete in Texas, everyone will be able to do the same thing I did regardless of the EV they own," Chamberlain remarked, signifying an inclusive electric future. Texas boldly charges forward with approximately 2,000 new EVs hitting the roads weekly, surging the total number to 293,436 from August 2023's count of 218,889.
