The Tennessee Volunteers are gearing up for fall training camp with an energy that’s becoming more palpable by the day. With Wednesday marking the onset of some serious preseason grind, Head Coach Josh Heupel and his squad have placed their sights on the prize: growth, precision, and, ultimately, championship glory. "It's time to go play ball," Heupel stated, emphasizing the importance of learning from errors without dwelling on them. As per WVLT, he maintained that growth is paramount at this time of the year as the season approaches rapidly.
A significant part of the Vols' anticipatory build-up circles around redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava. After an impressive Citrus Bowl MVP performance, expectations are sky-high. Iamaleava, who reportedly has the physical attributes down, is still honing his game's mental aspects, revealed Joey Halzle, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach. Looking forward optimistically, "We have a chance to climb really quickly," Heupel said, per WVLT. However, inadvertently signaling mistakes as a natural part of the process, the emphasis is on not repeating them.
As part of their rigorous fall camp training, starting Wednesday at 9 a.m., the Volunteers are embracing a collective mental and physical preparation mindset. Key defensive players, like linebacker Jeremiah Telander and defensive back Andre Turrentine, have voiced their strategies of taking it one day at a time without amplifying the pressure that fall camp inherently brings. "We just talked about it in the linebacker room, we're going to take it one day at a time," Telander shared, as cited by WVLT.
Moving the program forward despite the challenges of evolving a collegiate football team, Heupel takes pride in the team's journey. Taking over the program in 2021 during an NCAA investigation into the previous staff's recruiting violations, he has since steered the Vols towards a path of incremental success and development. Optimistically speaking and refusing to put ceilings on their potential, "With all the things we have navigated and had to get through I'm really proud of what we have done," Heupel mentioned, as per WBIR. However, running back Dylan Sampson understands his role in time for the change of seasons, which he knows are the hits he will take.
