As summer's heat wanes and nature offers up its wild bounty, those with a hankering for fresh, local edibles have a chance to enhance their foraging skills. Slated for Saturday, August 10, an introductory Summer Foraging class offered by Wargo Nature Center and led by Maria Wesserleon of Four Season Foraging invites nature lovers and aspiring foragers alike to discover the abundance of late summer's harvest.
The class, to take place from 10 am to 12 pm, welcomes anyone over the age of 14 to participate. It will cover the necessary skills to identify a variety of wild edibles, with an emphasis on both plants and mushrooms found in the nature reserve's diverse habitats. Running through the forests, the class promises to be an illuminating experience for diverse landscapes that include fields and wetlands, offering participants a thorough understanding of the ecological wealth at Wargo.
Additionally, the session will delve into the legal and ethical aspects of foraging, a critical component often overlooked by beginners. As stated by the Wargo Nature Center, participants of the Summer Foraging class will learn "how to accurately identify and prepare different plants and mushrooms for consumption" while also educating themselves on sustainable foraging practices.
Those interested can secure their spot at an accessible rate of $40 per person plus tax. It's an opportunity for those who have longed to explore the edible wild, or just curious souls looking to learn a new skill amidst the greenery. Interested foragers can register by visiting the official Anoka County Parks website. With limited space, early registration is encouraged to guarantee a place in this hands-on, enriching outdoor experience.
