The RAMMY Awards have selected their 2024 victors, concluding another year of celebrating culinary excellence in the Washington D.C. area. The ceremony, which took place yesterday evening, distinguished Falls Church's Ellie Bird as the New Restaurant of the Year, while chefs Angel Barreto of Anju and Masako Morishita of Perry's took home the awards for Chef of the Year and Rising Culinary Star of the Year, respectively, according to NBC Washington.
Among the restaurants that received recognition, Long Shot Hospitality, known for their establishments The Salt Line and Ometeo, triumphed through difficult business conditions to clinch two wins. The group's partner, Gavin Coleman, spoke about the substantial efforts and strategic planning required to maintain operations and innovate during challenging times - revealing in an interview with Washington Business Journal, "It hasn't been easy with return to work, to say the least, especially downtown, but we do a good job of coming up with a plan, we're very strategic in that regard, we all have roles in the company, and once we decide on something, we've been able to follow through on the plan, and it's worked out so far."
The RAMW (Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington) also shed light on future hurdles for D.C. restaurants in light of minimum wage adjustments. Still, hope remains in the form of adaptive strategies. The past chair of RAMW's board of directors and current partner at Long Shot Hospitality, Gavin Coleman, has expressed concerns over rising wage costs and their implications. "I think you're going to see a radically different approach to service," he mentioned to Washington Business Journal. "Every year now it's just another crapshoot, when we're trying to figure out how we're going to make it another year under the current guidelines. Everybody's viewing it a different way."
The RAMW, which facilitated the arrangements for the competitive selection, made eligibility contingent upon the membership status and compliance with each award category's standards. While an anonymous panel determined most winners, public votes guided the outcomes of five categories, along with the Joan Hisaoka Allied Member of the Year award. This process as outlined by WUSA9 aims to ensure transparency and fairness in recognizing the district's best. The RAMMY Awards continue to epitomize the sense of community and excellence embedded in D.C.'s vibrant restaurant scene, heralding establishments and individuals alike for their standout contributions to the region's culinary landscape.
