A 19-year-old Washington, D.C. resident, Jamari Jackson, has been sentenced to a 40-month incarceration for charges of felony strangulation and the attempted kidnapping of a female victim. In a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith confirmed the sentencing details. Jackson will also face three years of supervised release post-prison as ordered by Superior Court Judge Lynn Leibovitz, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia.
On the night of July 24, 2023, Jackson confronted the unnamed victim in Columbia Heights, where he grabbed her by the throat, claimed to have a weapon, and tried to force her into a secluded area. The ordeal escalated as Jackson assaulted the woman, threatening her life, until intervention by residents halted the attack. Jackson's guilty plea on April 10, acknowledged the allegations against him, encompassing one count of attempted kidnapping, one count of strangulation, and one count of simple assault, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia.
The case, which drew attention from the Sex Offense and Domestic Violence Unit, saw Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Roessler and LaVater Massie-Banks leading the prosecution for the attempted kidnapping and strangulation case. The simple assault case was investigated and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rana Wahdan, of the General Crimes Section. In an announcement, Graves and Smith lauded the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department and the prosecuting attorneys involved in bringing Jackson to justice.
