As summer heats up, so does the urgency for new hunters in Washington state to ready themselves for the fall. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is putting out a reminder that those looking to partake in the upcoming hunting seasons should get a jump on mandatory hunter education courses now. "The summer is a great time for new hunters to take a required hunter education course so they're ready to go hunting this fall," said Dave Whipple, WDFW hunter education section manager, in a release from WDFW.
Whipple noted that, while there may be a crunch for classes in the fall, their volunteer instructors are offering plenty of classes throughout the summer. With the requirement for hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972, to complete the hunter education course before being able to purchase a license, WDFW is aiming to mitigate any last-minute rushes and ensure participants aren't left in the lurch. Prospective hunters have the option of a once-in-a-lifetime deferral to hunt with an eligible licensed hunter before completing their own course, for which the WDFW urges potential applicants to check requirements before applying.
According to the recent WDFW press release, the hunter education offerings include both in-person and hybrid courses. The in-person approach spans roughly 15 hours of instruction held over multiple days, featuring both classroom and field components. Meanwhile, the hybrid course entails online learning coupled with a field skills evaluation spanning four to six hours, overseen by certified instructors.
For those looking to unfold the map of their hunting journey, WDFW's website is the compass to guide them. It offers detailed insights into the hunter education process and is also where upcoming courses can be found and signed up for. In crafting stewards of the wild, the WDFD continues its mission to preserve, protect and perpetuate the region's wildlife and ecosystems, alongside maintaining sustainable recreational and commercial opportunities for fish and wildlife endeavors.
