As the Water Follies weekend draws near, plans for ensuring the safety of the anticipated crowd have been announced by the Washington State Patrol. From July 26th to 28th, troopers are set to conduct special emphasis patrols at this annual event that typically sees thousands of spectators throng to the Tri-Cities area, as noted by the Washington State Patrol.
The initiatives this year are to specifically crack down on behaviors that lead to serious injuries or fatalities on the road. "Our primary goal is to reduce serious injury and fatality collisions," states the report from Washington State Patrol. They encourage citizens to enjoy the Water Follies weekend responsibly by not drinking and driving, ensuring to always wear their seat belts, and to make sure to adhere to safe and legal driving speeds. The intent is to try to safeguard a welcoming and secure environment for all during the event.
To handle the increased traffic and the unique challenges it presents, additional troopers from across the region will be deployed to the Tri-Cities for the duration of the event. The increased presence is a response to the heightened number of visitors and the expected congestion, especially near Columbia Park, which is traditionally at the heart of the festivities.
The strategies to increase safety will include the presence of aircraft, motorcycle troopers, and unmarked patrol cars that are to be deployed along Interstate 82, State Route 240, and State Route 395. These patrols will be particularly vigilant throughout the weekend in an enhanced drive to prevent collisions and promote a safe driving environment for everyone.
