A Washington Township man has been sentenced for the 2022 shooting death of his wife, according to a report from The Detroit News. 48-year-old Matthew Louis Mollicone received a prison sentence ranging from 7 to 15 years for voluntary manslaughter, 12 to 40 years for assault with intent to murder, and an additional six years for three counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. Macomb Circuit Court handed down the sentence yesterday.

The incident stemmed from a confrontation on July 12, 2022, when Mollicone and his wife drove to confront a man in Ray Township over his contact with Mollicone's wife. Upon arrival, a shootout ensued with the other man in a garage, resulting in Mollicone's wife being shot and killed. Detailed by the CBS News Detroit report, the convicted approached the victim and produced a firearm, which led to the deadly exchange of gunfire.

Following an eight-day trial in May this year, a jury found Mollicone guilty on all five charges, reports ClickOnDetroit. The prosecution, not satisfied with the sentence, argued for a greater penalty akin to the act's severity. "The court's decision to impose a lighter sentence than we requested does not diminish the severity of the crime committed", said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. "We believe the evidence presented warranted a harsher penalty to reflect the gravity of taking a human life. Nonetheless, we respect the court's discretion and remain committed to seeking justice for the victim and their family."
