Abington Township residents and commuters, brace yourselves for a weekend of detours. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has decided it's the right moment to push forward with its plans to construct a new trail on Greenwood Avenue in Montgomery County, an initiative championed for its promise of enhanced local safety.
From the evening of July 19 to the dawn of July 22, Greenwood Avenue will be strictly off-limits between Washington Lane and Meetinghouse Road, so if you're planning to traverse this stretch, your GPS will need recalibrating. PennDOT has flagged Meetinghouse Road, Route 73 (Township Line Road), and Route 611 (Old York Road) as suitable alternatives, despite the certainty that this change will bring traffic snarls and prolonged travel times, much to the chagrin of daily commuters.
It's not all barricades and roadblocks, though. Residences and businesses up to the construction zone will retain their connectivity—small mercy for those in the thick of it. PennDOT, always with an eye on the skies, predicates all their plans on the weather playing ball. We all know how that can go, so if you find yourself caught in an unexpected jam, you'll know who to thank (or not).
The upshot? If you're planning a jaunt through Abington Township this weekend, set aside a little more time for your travels, or better yet, sidestep Greenwood Avenue altogether; local authorities have made it clear that, though temporary, disruptions are inevitable, and patience will be as necessary as your car keys.
