Following a nerve-wracking period of uncertainty for her family, Mayanin Vazquez, a 16-year-old girl who had been missing for over a week has been found safe, a family spokesperson confirmed early Wednesday. The teenager’s disappearance had left her family in Watts in a state of desperation as she vanished on her way to her first day of school.
As reported by ABC7, no further explanation of the circumstances of Mayanin's return was given, with the Vazquez family asking for privacy to concentrate on healing and spending invaluable time together. The community's rallying during the search efforts received heartfelt thanks from the family, "We cannot express our gratitude enough for the community's support in finding Mayanin and bringing her back home," a statement said. Before being located, the teenager's journey that fateful morning, as described by ABC7, was supposed to be straightforward - a walk to South East High School with her siblings.
However, events took an unsettling turn when Mayanin told her siblings she'd stop at the Smart & Final store near Laurel and East 97 streets in Watts and subsequently did not attend her classes. Surveillance footage last showed her outside the store accompanied by an unidentified man, which heightened the family's concern. Samuel Maldonado, Mayanin's father, had been particularly distressed, remarking to KTLA, "I’m torn up," adding, "I don’t know how I’m standing."
Law enforcement had been involved in the case, with detectives from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department investigating but initially failing to uncover leads. In a statement obtained by FOX LA, officials mentioned that Vazquez had never previously left home without informing of her whereabouts, heightening the peculiarity of the situation. The girl's father had also received a worrying late-night call claiming possession of his daughter, though the claim led nowhere and only added to the family's agony. Thankfully, the family's ordeal concluded positively with Vazquez's safe return, though details surrounding her week-long absence have not been disclosed.
Described by her father as a straight-A student and an athlete, with no prior indications of wanting to leave home, the community and her family were perplexed by Mayanin's disappearance. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detective who spoke to ABC7 confirmed no criminal investigation is in progress as the teenager indicated she was simply "hanging out with friends."
