Tampa residents and visitors are bracing for heavy traffic as the Tampa Bay Comic Convention is set to descend upon the Tampa Convention Center this weekend. Taking place from Friday, August 23 through Sunday, August 25, the convention is expected to draw a crowd of approximately 42,000 people, potentially clogging the streets and maxing out parking capacities in the vicinity of the event.
Commuters should prepare to potentially slowly navigate through the increased congestion. The Tampa Police Department will be on hand at key crosswalks in an effort to manage the traffic flow, which is predicted to peak during the setup on Thursday, August 22 at 2 p.m., and again when the event concludes on Sunday, August 25 at 5 p.m. A statement released by the City of Tampa advises people to "please allow for extra commute time" during these periods.
The economic upside of this gathering is notable, with an estimated impact of $5,848,846 projected for the City of Tampa and its surrounding communities. This influx of capital comes at a time when event-driven economies are more important than ever for local businesses and vendors.
