Del Rio's Port of Entry became the site of a significant drug bust as U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted over $498,000 worth of cocaine. The illegal narcotics, totaling more than 37 pounds, were discovered on August 22 after a Nissan Sports Utility Vehicle was singled out for a secondary inspection, a move that culminated in the arrest of the vehicle's driver and a hefty seizure of drugs aimed to enter the streets of America.
According to a press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the operation involved the collaboration of a CBP canine and a non-intrusive inspection system, which led to the discovery of 14 packages of alleged cocaine cleverly hidden within a compartment in the SUV's floorboard. "This cocaine seizure illustrates our frontline officers’ commitment to securing our nation’s borders and preventing dangerous narcotics from entering the United States," stated Port Director Liliana Flores.
Upon the successful uncovering of the narcotics, CBP seized the drugs and brought the driver into custody. In cooperation with the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division, a criminal investigation was promptly initiated, signaling a no-tolerance approach towards trafficking and the unwavering vigilance of border security personnel.
