The Metropolitan Police Department, alongside the FBI and ATF, is offering a combined reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect involved in the death of an officer. MPD's official release states that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, August 28, when members of the Robbery Suppression Unit witnessed a suspect exit a vehicle and flee onto I-295.
Efforts to make contact were thwarted as the suspect was seen disposing of a firearm in a storm drain before escaping on the back of a motorcycle. During the operation to recover the said weapon, a gun discharged accidentally, striking an officer who later succumbed to his injuries. The statement by the MPD asks that the public keep the officer's family in their thoughts and prayers.
Details provided by the department indicate that the incident happened near the 4500 block of Quarles Street, Northeast around 5:40 p.m. The unit was actively canvassing the area when the series of events leading to the officer's death unfolded. The involved officer was transported to the hospital via helicopter but did not survive. MPD is offering a $20,000 reward, supplemented by $20,000 from the FBI Washington Field Office and $10,000 from the ATF Washington Field Division.
The agencies strongly urge anyone with potentially relevant information to come forward. Callers can reach the police at 202-727-9099 or opt to anonymously submit tips via text message to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
