Three Delaware health centers are sharing nearly $23 million in federal Rural Health Transformation Program awards for care expansion and clinic upgrades. The Trump administration announced the awards, KATU reported.
Westside Family Healthcare received $11.3 million for clinical and medical-record upgrades. La Red Health Center received $10.1 million to expand medical, behavioral-health, dental and specialty services, while Henrietta Johnson Medical Center received $1.29 million to add staff serving underserved patients, according to KATU.
New vehicles, established outreach
Some of the funding is designated for two mobile health units and a passenger van to serve rural and agricultural communities, KATU reported. The vehicles would add to a longer-running local effort: Bay to Bay News reported that Westside’s Migrant Seasonal and Agricultural Workers team has traveled to Delaware farms and residential locations since 2011. That history predates the current award and does not establish what services or results the new funding will produce.
The awards also support modernization and care-delivery work, including remote patient monitoring, cybersecurity improvements and care coordination, KATU reported. Those investments sit alongside the direct-service funding: Westside’s clinical and records upgrades, La Red’s expanded service lines and Henrietta Johnson’s additional staffing.
Part of a broader rural-health effort
The Delaware grants are part of a federal program directing $50 billion to states over five fiscal years. State Health and Value Strategies says states must use funds across at least three of 10 approved categories, which include workforce development, technology and telehealth, chronic-disease management and new care models.
The access challenge is national, not a Delaware-specific measurement: a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rural-health review published in 2022 said many rural Americans face barriers to comprehensive, high-quality and affordable care. The Delaware awards outline planned investments; the cited sources do not report results from these grants.
