The Arlington Circuit Court, which also serves the City of Falls Church, is gearing up for its yearly task of culling a pool of potential jurors. According to a recent announcement on the court's official website, they will begin sending out juror questionnaires in late August to a random selection of roughly 35,000 residents from Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. These selected residents will have the opportunity to qualify for jury duty for the period starting January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025.
The process is dictated by State law, pulling potential jurors from the State Board of Elections' repository of registered voters. Responding is a must for those who do receive the questionnaire. Failure to do so or providing incomplete responses may mean a personal invitation to the Court to finish the job, as indicated on the court's announcement.
This fall, Jury Commissioners is going through the questionnaires to ascertain who's eligible to serve based on criteria from the General Assembly. To ease the process, the Court is nudging everyone to submit their forms online by way of a secure website. Yet, paper forms are still available for those who prefer it or have face internet accessibility barriers. For detailed instructions or exemption queries, visit the Courts & Judicial Services website.
Filling out the form online saves resources and time for participants. If you encounter any technical issues, troubleshooting steps are available, or you can request a paper form from the court. However, the court won’t accept excuses at this questionnaire stage. "The questionnaire is not a summons to appear so please do not call the Clerk’s Office asking to be excused from jury duty,” reads the instruction from their website. Accommodations and exclusions are considerations reserved for later.
For those chosen, their tenure may vary. Still, the average is a commitment of one day or the duration of one trial, which often stretches between a singular day or three, with some potentially lingering longer. Jurors are compensated with a $50 per day stipend is noted as reimbursement for expenses incurred, which covers the hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.—the general window of availability required by the Court.
