Get ready to adjust your weekend plans, Arlington residents and visitors. On September 7, 2024, the 22nd Annual Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff, & ECC 9/11 Memorial 5k race will be underway, prompting significant street closures around the Pentagon and Crystal City areas. The Arlington County Police Department has laid out a schedule for the closures which will fundamentally reshape traffic patterns for the duration of the evening event.
According to an announcement by Arlington County, starting from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m., roads including Army Navy Drive from S. Eads Street to 12th Street S. will be off-limits for vehicles. Following closely, between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., there will be further closures spanning S. Eads Street, S. Fern Street, S. Hayes Street, and several other key passages. Residents intent on traveling through these areas are tipped to brace for delays and urged to find alternate paths to their destinations.
County officials anticipate heavy traffic congestion as a result of the road closures. They are advising motorists to plan for extra travel time and to consider utilizing different modes of transportation. For those still choosing to drive, paid parking is available at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City garage. "Race attendees are encouraged to use Metro or other forms of multi modal transportation," the authorities emphasized, signaling a preference to lessen the road strain.
With street parking restrictions firmly in place, Arlington is taking measures to ensure the flow of traffic and safety for race participants and spectators. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted, and parked in a spot where they are erected, risk vehicles being ticketed or towed. Arlington County's website offers an online portal for individuals to locate towed vehicles, and a non-emergency number is provided for those needing further assistance.
As the community comes together to honor the memories of those lost on 9/11, the cooperation and patience of everyone in the region will be appreciated. The event is more than road closures; it is a symbol of remembrance and resilience—a course charted through streets etched with stories of sacrifice and unity.
