Atlanta's own Sergio Kitchens, better known as the rapper Gunna, is taking significant strides to economically empower families in his native South Fulton. Gunna, in collaboration with The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC), has initiated a venture to provide $1,000 monthly stipends to local families in need. The project, officially named the Gunna x BMAC 30349 Guaranteed Income Program, is set to officially launch on September 18, with distributions starting in October. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the aim is to alleviate economic stress for over 24 households residing in the 30349 zip code.
The program is designed not only to provide a financial safety net but also to embolden families with additional support. Participants will receive mentorship from seasoned professionals within various industries, including music, film, fashion, and tech—an endeavor to potentially break a cyclic barrio. As stated by BMAC co-founder, president, and CEO Willie "Prophet" Stiggers, "BMAC’s mission to achieve systemic equity must begin with economic justice," as per FOX 5 Atlanta. The foundation for this program is laid upon the critical need for financial and cultural opportunities in a community.
Establishing a precedent for other artists and organizations to follow, Gunna's efforts extend beyond just financial aid. Previous philanthropic work in the same community includes a free grocery store at Ronald E. McNair Middle School, an institution Gunna once attended. Gunna told FOX 5 Atlanta, "When I launched Gunna’s Great Giveaway, my goal was to uplift my hometown by providing resources that could make a tangible difference." This time, the focus is squarely on creating financial stability for families struggling to make ends meet.
Eligibility for the program requires applicants to be in financial need and living within the targeted zip code. Applications are being accepted through the foundation's website, and a cohort of 30 families will benefit from this initiative, as reported by Atlanta News First. Each selected family is to receive $1,000 per month for a year, along with "personalized support to refer participants to additional resources as needed."
This latest charitable move arrives following Gunna's embroilment and subsequent plea deal in the much-publicized RICO case involving fellow Atlanta rapper Young Thug. Despite legal challenges faced in the past, Gunna's focus remains unwaveringly directed towards creating a sustainable impact for his community. This program uniquely positions Gunna at the intersection of community activism and the music industry.
