Health is wealth and Austin is putting that saying into action with a community-centric health day set for August 17. In collaboration with Austin Public Health's Health Equity Unit and Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Austinites are getting a friendly nudge to bring someone they care about to Take a Loved One for a Check-up Day 2024, which will be held at Parque Zaragosa Neighborhood Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as detailed by the City of Austin. It's not just an opportunity for a free health screening, but a call to address the deep-seated disparities in healthcare outcomes within the community.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by some stark figures, as Austin Public Health's 2023 Critical Health Indicators Report indicated that Black residents suffer from heart disease at a rate 57 percent higher than white residents and are 34 percent more likely to succumb to cancer, as per the City of Austin. Furthermore, Black and Hispanic populations have nearly double the diagnosis rate for diabetes compared to white residents with Black individuals almost three times more likely to die from diabetes-related complications — a sobering reminder of the health inequities that are still prevalent.
"Regular health screenings play an important role to prevent disease and support overall health, but too many of our friends and loved ones skip their regular check-ups," Adrienne Sturrup, Austin Public Health Director, emphasized the importance of the event, aiming to kick-start a new habit of regular health assessments, as stated by the City of Austin.
