An Austin man, identified as 61-year-old William Augustus Bryant, has been handed a 40-year prison term for a drug trafficking conviction, with a Wilkinson County jury also imposing a $10,000 fine for the crime. A report by CBS Austin confirmed that Bryant pled guilty to manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance.

During a routine traffic stop on July 15, 2023, Texas Department of Public Safety officers found a bag containing fentanyl in Bryant’s vehicle, inadvertently triggering the investigation that led to his arrest. A subsequent search of his residence, according to KVUE, resulted in the seizure of various narcotics including cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, mushrooms, and marijuana, along with seven firearms and two stolen motorcycles.

Evidence of Bryant’s involvement in an aggravated kidnapping that took place six days after the search of his home was also presented to the court, showcasing a dark pattern that extended beyond drug dealing. His significant criminal history painted a troubling picture, with previous convictions for driving while intoxicated, drug possession, theft, and disorderly conduct, further weighing against him.

“Bryant’s guilty plea and lengthy sentence are a significant victory for our community and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our prosecutors and law enforcement partners,” Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick told CBS Austin. “Today’s sentence sends a clear message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in Williamson County,” he added. The conviction wraps a long-standing effort to bring Bryant to justice, reaffirming the daunting threat his activities posed to public safety, as uncovered by the prosecutors’ investigation.
