A major burglary operation has been thwarted in Southern California, with nine individuals charged with a series of home burglaries that resulted in significant losses for the victims. According to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, the accused are facing multiple counts of first-degree residential burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary in connection with at least 30 incidents in San Diego and beyond.
The burglaries, which targeted homes primarily in the Mira Mesa neighborhood from February to May, ended in arrests last week across Los Angeles and Riverside County. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan detailed the complex task law enforcement faced: "Stopping this prolific burglary crew took incredible coordination among law enforcement in several jurisdictions and from many different agencies." The operation spanned two states, accounting for approximately 55 residential burglaries in California and Nevada, with total losses in San Diego County estimated at least $700,000, as per the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.
The extensive investigation entailed nearly 100 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, who meticulously worked to conduct surveillance, execute search warrants, and facilitate the arrests. This collective enforcement recovered eleven firearms and significant sums of cash. Amaya Armstead, Timmon Betts, Gregory Davis III, Daniel Esquivel, Tyrell Haley, Nakia McBath Jr., Khaliq Thomas, Noel Torres, and Keshaun Watson are tied to the case. Their charges range from three to 24 counts of burglary, which, depending on prior records and the level of involvement, could lead to prison sentences ranging from nearly nine years to life.
San Diego Police Deputy Chief Paul Connelly emphasized the impact of the criminal activities, noting, "Our homes are the place we should feel safe, but these criminals took advantage of our communities to carry out their crimes." The burglary crews consisted of at least three individuals who wore masks and gloves, breaking into homes through rear sliding glass windows to take valuables before fleeing. Many burglaries occurred as mini crime sprees, with multiple break-ins on the same day. San Diego residents can find solace in the diligent work of their local police, as Connelly assured them of the enhanced safety of their homes thanks to the thorough investigation. The defendants will face arraignment in San Diego Superior Court this week.
