With a ribbon-cutting ceremony by its belts, Balcones Terrace Apartments in North Austin is nearly ready to welcome residents. Reported by KVUE, the event featured appearances from Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, and representatives from Foundation Communities, which manages the property. Plans detail 123 units specialized for individuals experiencing homelessness or earning significantly low incomes.
The Balcones Terrace Community, as detailed in the news release obtained by KXAN, promises to be more than shelter. It aims to provide a supportive environment complete with an on-site food pantry, a community kitchen, and case management services. Mayor Watson underscored the intended impact at the event, saying, "It is a new chance. It is hope. It is stability. It’s love that otherwise would be lost."
The repurposed locale, a four-story hotel turned housing, is situated near MoPac Expressway and the Capital of Texas Highway. It's a practical manifestation of the city's commitment to mitigate the housing crisis, underscoring previous voter-approved bonds totaling $600 million over five years aimed at funding such affordable housing initiatives.
In addition to city funding, the grand opening of Balcones Terrace coincides with the 50th year of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program, which, has endowed Austin with over $350 million to bolster housing and economic development over the years. The conversion of this space couples a $10 million investment from the City of Austin, with a similar amount from HUD for the Community Development Block Grant, facilitating a rejuvenated domicile for those in need. Fifty Housing Authority of the City of Austin vouchers will also be allocated for those emerging from extreme homelessness conditions, as reported by KVUE.
While the Balcones Terrace is not yet open, prospective residents can get on the waitlist via an online pre-application. This step signifies a growing strategy to address the stark realities of affordability and homelessness in Austin, a challenge that continues to shape the urban landscape.
