Scott and Acting Director of the Department of Public Works Khalil Zaied announcing that they've secured services from a D.C.-based law firm, Conn Maciel Carey LLP. The firm specializes in workplace safety and has been tasked to methodically review and scrutinize the safety processes of Baltimore's DPW, particularly focusing on heat safety protocols. This week marked the kickoff of their evaluation with expectations set for a comprehensive list of safety recommendations by September's end, as detailed by the City of Baltimore press release.
This independent review aims to not only directly confront current safety concerns but to ultimately enhance overall employee welfare within the City. The administration has committed to publicly sharing the findings and improvements suggested by the law firm. "The insights from this additional outside review of DPW's workplace safety practices will play a critical role in strengthening safety standards and best practices across all City agencies," Mayor Scott stated, according to the press release. "Together, we will ensure that all City workers and their families can have the peace of mind knowing that nothing is more important than the safety of the frontline public servants who make our city run."
As part of this collaborative effort, the City has invited feedback and involvement from an array of stakeholders, including labor unions and family members of DPW employees. One notable invitee is the family of Ronald Silver II, the Bureau of Solid Waste crew member whose tragic death on August 2nd has catalyzed deeper introspection into DPW's safety culture and practices.
With the process now in full motion, the firm is set to rigorously dig into the current state of DPW's safety operations with hopes for impactful change, echoing Acting Director Zaied's commitment to rigorously ensure employee safety. The end goal is the establishment of a comprehensive occupational health and safety program that stands to protect the myriad of employees serving the city.
