The Grand Canyon National Park witnessed yet another tragedy following the violent lash of nature. The body of Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Arizona, was found Sunday in the aftermath of a flash flood that hit Havasu Canyon on August 22. According to the National Park Service, her body was discovered near river mile 176 on the Colorado River around 11:30 a.m. by individuals on a commercial river trip. Nickerson had been reported missing in the days following the flood, as per 8 News Now.

Before her disappearance, Nickerson was separated from her husband during the deluge, approximately 100 yards from the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River, as USA Today reported. Her husband was also swept away during the incident, but was later found by local rafters, family members disclosed in a KPHO-TV interview. The park rangers led the recovery of Nickerson's body using a helicopter and subsequently relinquished the remains to the Coconino County Medical Examiner for further investigation.

Over the course of three days immediately following the flood, search efforts were undertaken by the National Park Service. Further inquiries into the circumstances of Nickerson’s death are currently active and being conducted by the National Park Service in partnership with the Coconino County Medical Examiner, as reported by 8 News Now.
