Goodwill of Southern Nevada has opened a new retail thrift store at 3355 E. Russell Road in Las Vegas, staffed by 40 team members who previously worked at the nonprofit's recently closed Tropicana and Pecos location. The store held its official grand opening Thursday, handing out $5 gift cards and eco-friendly shopping bags to the first 200 customers who walked through the doors.
The new location, near Harry Reid International Airport, is managed by store manager Dulce Villa and offers tens of thousands of donated items, including clothing, housewares and electronics, according to KSNV. Store team members prepare newly donated items for sale every day, and the location accepts donations during regular store hours. President and CEO Rick Neal said in a statement that Goodwill is thrilled to open the doors and welcome the Las Vegas community to the new location, per the same report.
The move continues a pattern for the organization: when the nearby Tropicana and Pecos store closed, its 40 employees transferred to the new Russell Road site rather than losing their jobs, KSNV's report notes. The relocation fits into what Hoodline previously reported is a broader strategy of maintaining dense retail availability while consolidating operations in high-traffic East Las Vegas corridors.
A Nonprofit Rebuilding After Bankruptcy
Goodwill of Southern Nevada now operates 21 retail store locations, along with specialty boutiques, clearance outlets and three attended donation centers spread across Clark and Nye counties, according to the organization's own location listings. That footprint represents a rebound: the nonprofit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2017 after rapid retail expansion and heavy rent burdens strained its finances, and it emerged from reorganization in April 2019 after its store count temporarily dropped from 21 to 17, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Rick Neal took over as president and CEO that same June, arriving as a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who had previously commanded Creech Air Force Base's 799th Air Base Group and served as chief operating officer of the Clark County School District, the Review-Journal reported at the time. Since then, the organization has grown to employ over 900 team members across its regional operations, up from roughly 800 in 2019, according to Goodwill's own community impact figures.
Retail Sales Fund Job Training and Community Programs
Goodwill's retail network sells more than 12.7 million gently used items and diverts over 30 million pounds of material from local landfills each year, fueled by nearly 900,000 annual donation drop-offs, per the nonprofit's community impact data. Those store sales help underwrite Goodwill's free career services, which the KSNV report describes as helping aspiring workers build skills and get hired with local employers as well as at Goodwill itself.
That mission extends beyond the sales floor. In 2025, the organization marked its 50th anniversary since its 1975 founding while launching the Care-to-Care campaign, a register-checkout fundraising partnership supporting local homeless prevention nonprofits. The following June, Goodwill partnered with Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada to open a dedicated career center at 4440 E. Tropicana Ave. focused on coaching emerging workers ages 16 to 25, a project Hoodline covered when it launched. The Nevada Legislature backed similar workforce goals in its 2023–2024 budget cycle, allocating $1.5 million to Goodwill of Southern Nevada under Assembly Bill 525 to expand local job-development programs.
What Shoppers Will Find at the New Store
For bargain hunters, the Russell Road location follows Goodwill's standard pricing structure: a rotating Color Tag sale offers 50% off items Tuesday through Sunday, with $1 pricing on Mondays, alongside monthly 50% off Red Tag sales on premium merchandise. The new store expands Goodwill of Southern Nevada's footprint in the area, giving East Las Vegas shoppers another stop for donated clothing, housewares and electronics while keeping the Tropicana store's former staff employed under one roof.
