The landscape of youth unemployment in Las Vegas has a new combatant with the opening of the Junior Achievement Career Center. Launched in partnership with Goodwill of Southern Nevada, this center, located at 4440 East Tropicana Avenue, set out to empower young adults aged 16 to 25, equipping them with crucial skills to enter the workforce. The grand opening this past Friday drew attention to not only its facilities but also the promise of new horizons for the city's youth.
Goodwill's latest venture into community support aims to actively bridge the difficult transition from school to the adult working world. The career center provides services ranging from resume writing and interview preparations to career exploration and financial management tools. Bryan Stewart from Goodwill underscored the urgency of the situation, noting to KTNV, "Unemployment is fairly high among 16- to 25-year-olds, and they’re under a lot of pressure from their families and their communities to be active." He emphasized the importance of offering "opportunities begin" for those considering alternative paths such as skilled trades.
The career center seeks to offer a structured environment inside which young individuals can explore a variety of vocational options. As Michelle Jackson, the CEO of Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada, expressed in an interview with 8 News Now, with Nevada's unemployment rate being the highest in the nation, initiatives like this center are pivotal in keeping youth out of the unemployment statistics and helping them to "be able to thrive in their futures."
The innovative design of the center includes JA BizTown and Finance Park, simulated municipalities that allow students to experientially learn economic concepts and the intricacies of entrepreneurship. Offering more than theoretical knowledge, the center’s hands-on approach is structured to transform understanding into practical application. According to Stewart, Goodwill provides career coaches—accessible by walk-in or appointment.
