A hiking trip on the Mesa Trail in Boulder County turned tragic this weekend when a 57-year-old man was found dead. The Boulder County Communications Center was alerted just after 1:00 p.m. yesterday that the man, who was on a hiking excursion, had not returned as scheduled and was unreachable by phone, prompting concerns from his family.
Search and rescue teams promptly commenced to search the sector where the hiker was believed to have been. They discovered his body a short while later at the base of a rock formation called "The Slab," situated near where the Shanahan and Mesa trails intersect. A multitude of agencies including the Boulder County Sheriff's Office and the likes of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, were involved in the search and recovery effort.
According to Boulder County, an investigation is being carried out by detectives from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office alongside the Boulder County Coroner's Office to determine the man's identity and the cause and manner of his death.
Assisting units such as Boulder County Mounted Search and Rescue, Boulder Emergency Squad, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and the Boulder County Coroner's Office were on the scene to aid in the search and recovery process. The officials have yet to release the identity of the deceased as the investigation is ongoing to fully ascertain just how the incident transpired.
