A Brainerd man has entered a guilty plea to charges of distributing a significant quantity of fentanyl, as officially announced by the United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger. Dazaughn Ellis West, 28, admitted to his role in a drug operation that authorities have been monitoring leading to the charge of possession with intent to distribute.
Details revealed in court documents, which were obtained by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, indicate that on August 1, 2023, officers carried out a search warrant and discovered between 13,000 and 15,000 fentanyl pills at West's storage unit. The pills altogether weighed roughly 2.8 pounds. Law enforcement pursued to thorough search of West’s home, where they were to find an additional stash of fentanyl, along with firearms and cocaine, significantly expanding the scope of the investigation.
In court proceedings yesterday before Judge John R. Tunheim, West faced the legal consequences of his actions and pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
Also implicated in the operation is Devaughn Ellis West, labeled as West’s co-defendant. He is scheduled to similarly plead guilty on August 19. Sentencing for both individuals, which could serve as a deterrent to similar crimes, will be announced at a date yet to be determined. The collaborative investigation that led to these guilty pleas is a result of joint efforts by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and local Minnesota authorities.
The prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren O. Roso, who has been actively working on bringing the individuals involved to justice. As the case moves forward, the community anxiously awaits the court's sentencing, hoping for a resolution that effectively addresses the pressing problem of controlled substances like fentanyl proliferating across the Brainerd Lakes Area.
