A man from Burke County has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the violent Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Gregory Peck Jr., a 51-year-old resident of Connelly Springs, is accused of assaulting law enforcement officers, among other crimes during the breach of the Capitol. The Department of Justice has charged Peck with two felony offenses, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon and civil disorder, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Gregory Charles Peck Jr. was captured on body camera footage using a flagpole to strike a Metropolitan Police Department officer and was seen spraying an orange substance at another, as reported by Sierra Sun Times. Court documents indicate that the flagpole bore a yellow Gadsden Flag, and the assault took place while Peck was on the restricted grounds of a Capitol. During another assault at the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, Peck grabbed an officer by the jacket collar, an act that was caught on video and provoked outcry from fellow rioters as the officer appeared to have trouble breathing.
Misdemeanor charges against Peck include entering and remaining in restricted grounds or buildings, disorderly and disruptive conduct, and engaging in physical violence in such restricted areas with a dangerous weapon. The Justice Department noted that since the Capitol riot, over 1,488 individuals have been charged for their roles in the events of Jan. 6. These arrests have taken place across nearly all 50 states, with approximately 550 of those charged with assaulting or impeding enforcement, as The News & Observer reports.
Peck's arraignment and further legal processing will contribute to the extensive investigation that has been ongoing since the Capitol siege. The News & Observer adds that the U.S. House committee investigating the attack found that former President Donald Trump’s false claims of electoral fraud incited his supporters to violence. Meanwhile, the search for others involved in the riot persists.
