California, in a pioneering effort to strengthen its position in the AI industry, has entered into a partnership with NVIDIA to foster innovation and workforce training throughout the state. Both entities are working to integrate artificial intelligence education into community colleges and universities.
Governor Gavin Newsom and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang have unveiled a multi-faceted initiative that will provide access to AI technologies, endorse job creation, and utilize AI tools to address state challenges. This initiative includes bringing NVIDIA's AI hardware, software, and comprehensive curriculum into educational institutions to bolster students' skills for emerging careers. It also aims to train 100,000 individuals across the state, such as students, college faculty, developers, and data scientists, to harness AI for future endeavors. This was stated in a press release by Gov. Newsom and is supported by various projects and educational efforts, as reported by the Office of the Governor.
Concurrently, NVIDIA is extending its AI educational initiatives across the state, with a focus on a variety of sectors, including biotechnology, life sciences, and media, as noted by NVIDIA, which emphasizes the company's commitment to democratizing access to AI resources among students from diverse backgrounds and also highlights collaborative projects with university systems and plans to train students on advanced applications like digital twins and underwater data center technology.
The importance of this collaboration is underscored by the involvement of high-ranking state officials. Amy Tong, secretary of the California Government Operations Agency, acknowledged NVIDIA's role as an instrument to prepare California's workforce for the future. According to NVIDIA, Stewart Knox, secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, expressed an eagerness to train a forward-looking workforce while motivating individuals outside the current labor market.
Serving more than 2 million students, the California Community Colleges will greatly benefit from this program, as highlighted by Sonya Christian, Chancellor of the state's community college system. She emphasized the impact of the partnership on equipping students with industry-aligned AI skills, highlighting the importance of equitable access to AI education and expressing confidence that the initiative will drive both individual prosperity and state economic competitiveness, as per the Office of the Governor.
