California's drive toward a greener future is hitting new milestones, as per recent numbers on zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales. Data for the second quarter of 2024 shows that the state has seen one of its most substantial quarters yet for new ZEV transactions. Embracing alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered cars and trucks, 1 in 4 new car buyers in California opted for zero-emission options, according to the state's government website.
A total of 118,181 ZEVs found new owners, accounting for 25.7% of overall vehicle sales in California. These figures not only exceed the prior quarter by nearly 10,000 units, they underline California's second-highest-ever market share for ZEV sales, as per the Governor's Office. This surge comes in the wake of Governor Gavin Newsom's well-documented push for a cleaner transportation sector, setting a precedent with 2035's goalpost for exclusively zero-emission new car sales.
Gov. Newsom has voiced a strong counter to those expressing doubts about the state's ambitious agenda, asserting, "California continues to prove the naysayers and skeptics wrong because our innovation is simply unmatched. Our policies helped lay the groundwork for our transition to clean cars – and now Californians are making the switch in record numbers. Clean cars are here, and they're here to stay – thanks to California," as stated by the Governor's Office. This assertion paints a picture of a state firmly rooted in its pledge to reshape its automotive landscape.
