The annual celebration of science and innovation, Cambridge Science Festival, is slated to mark its return this September, running from Monday, September 23 to Sunday, September 29, 2024. The MIT Museum in collaboration with the City of Cambridge is leading the charge, offering over 200 free events throughout Cambridge and the Greater Boston area. As reported by the City of Cambridge, the week-long festival will dive into the essence of our shared humanity, exploring how humans interact, explore, and discuss together.

This year's festival, the first under the direction of newly appointed MIT Museum Director Michael John Gorman, promises a diverse lineup designed to engage the public in science and innovation. "I couldn't be more pleased to be joining an institution which has such a strong legacy in producing the Cambridge Science Festival, and I look forward to welcoming the community to our exciting line-up of over 200 free events," Gorman expressed in a statement. The festivities will span multiple interests and ages, featuring adult-targeted events, student workshops, children's activities, networking opportunities, and nature walks, to name a few.

Emphasizing accessibility, the MIT Museum is set to offer free admission throughout the festival week, encouraging Cambridge residents to take advantage of membership opportunities – available for sign-up at the museum's welcome desk or online. The festival, now a staple in the Cambridge cultural calendar, continues its tradition of forging partnerships throughout the city, fostering a vibrant arena for innovation and community interaction. Yi-An Huang, Cambridge City Manager, noted the significance of the festival, stating, “This has become one of Cambridge’s signature events of the year and we are thrilled to once again partner with the MIT Museum for this special week-long showcase.”

Highlighted during the 2024 festival are thematic days such as "For the Win: Games, Puzzles, and the Science of Play" in Kendall Square and "Frontiers: A New Era of Space Exploration," co-curated with The Space Consortium, These curated days will bring an immersive focus to the festival, allowing for concentrated exploration of gaming, space, and even the intersection of science and fashion with "Electric Skin: Wearable Tech and the Future of Fashion," co-curated by Boston Fashion Week and Advanced Functional Fabrics of America. Festival Producer Brooke Ciardelli shared insights into the thematic direction: “As we enter a politically charged fall, we put a lot of thought into how Cambridge Science Festival can be a week of connection, community, and discussion. Our themes for 2024 reflect deep, shared human needs: how we play, how we explore, and how we dress.”

In addition to thematic experiences, the festival presents series like "In the Neighborhood" and "Lunch & Learn", and will once again conclude with the family-friendly "Carnival" at the Kendall/MIT Open Space. The full program guide will be released later this month, but a highlight includes "Democracy in the Age of AI", featuring Taiwan's inaugural Minister of Digital Affairs, Audrey Tang, among other esteemed speakers.
