The Carolinas are currently grappling with the effects of Tropical Storm Debby, as the system moves through the region, bringing with it the threat of severe flooding and potential damage. According to QC News, flash flood warnings have been issued along the I-77 corridor and areas to the east, with rain totals expected to reach 4 to 7 inches and Mecklenburg County under a Flood Watch through Friday morning.

In Wilmington and the broader Cape Fear region, historic rainfall of up to 15 inches is anticipated, as reported by Star News Online. The heavy downpours have so far spared power infrastructure, despite widespread cancellations at ILM airport. Debby is expected to skim off the South Carolina coast before potentially making landfall and then moving northward later in the week.

Not only is flooding a serious concern, but the region is facing multiple weather threats. My Fox 8 has reported the emerging danger of tornadoes, particularly in eastern North Carolina that could spread into the Piedmont on Thursday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center has observed the storm with sustained winds of 45 mph and noted its slow northwest movement at 7 mph.

Flood Watches remain in effect for several counties in central North Carolina, and even parts of Virginia, like Patrick County, are on alert. Some counties such as Davie are also under a Wind Advisory, reflecting concerns over gusts reaching 40-50 mph in areas within the heavier rain bands. As the storm advances, parts of the Piedmont have already seen between 3-5 inches of rain, with an additional 2-4 inches still possible.
