Commuters in Cheltenham Township should plan for extra travel time next week as PennDOT begins tree-clearing operations on Greenwood Avenue. The work is part of a larger project aiming to enhance the traffic flow and safety along Route 73 (Church Road), specifically at the intersections of Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road. PennDOT warns of a scheduled lane closure with flagging on Greenwood Avenue at the intersection with Route 73 (Church Road), from Monday, August 19, through Friday, August 23, between 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., according to PennDOT's statement.

The project also includes the addition of turn lanes at critical intersections and improvements to the existing traffic signals to streamline the confluence of vehicles. As part of the work, drainage systems are set to be upgraded and a new stormwater management system is to be installed, the effects of which aim to alleviate any longstanding water-related issues within the area. Drivers should be prepared for the resulting slowdowns and are advised to allow additional time when passing through.

Environmental considerations have been taken into account as well; the project entails environmental mitigation efforts tied to Curtis Arboretum. These include not just the removal but the planting of trees, salvaging wood for repurposing, and the reconstruction of stone walls. Furthermore, a new sidewalk is proposed to be extended along the north side of Route 73 (Church Road) from Rices Mill Road to Greenwood Avenue to cater to pedestrian needs.

Allan Myers, LP based out of Worcester, Pennsylvania, stands as the general contractor behind this $10,824,555 endeavor, which is fully backed by federal funds. With this substantial financial infusion, the upgrades slated to be completed in fall 2027, are not just an investment in the present infrastructure but also a commitment to a community's future mobility and environmental health.
