Chula Vista is opening up its community shuttle service to all adults, providing a cost-effective transit option and potentially reducing traffic congestion. Residents aged 18 to 54 can now enjoy rides for just two bucks, while those 55 and older can still hop on for free, as Chula Vista's official website reports. The shuttle, which operates on weekdays from 7 am to 7 pm, spans a service area from the Sweetwater River down to L Street, connecting several key points within the city.

According to the city's announcement, this move, which is an effort to provide an affordable transit option, isn't just about getting around — it's a strategic play for a more sustainable future. The shuttle fleet is completely electric, including ADA-accessible vehicles, an example of the city's commitment to inclusivity and green initiatives. Mayor John McCann, in a statement that bears the hallmarks of civic pride, highlighted the service as a critical part of Chula Vista’s path forward, saying, "This shuttle service expansion will be instrumental in the City’s innovative future, benefiting community members and our local economy", a sentiment echoed by Stacey Kurz, Chula Vista Director of Housing and Homeless Services, who recognized the immediate benefits of rideshare opportunities for day-to-day activities from shopping to doctor's visits.

The city is launching an accompanying marketing campaign to spread the word about this affordable mobility option, which is designed to boost usage. The campaign will feature various attractions and essentials located within the shuttle’s operating radius, such as downtown eateries, grocery stores, and health care providers, thereby encouraging citizens to leverage the convenience offered by the door-to-door service.

Since its inception in 2022, the shuttle service has witnessed approximately 50,000 riders — with monthly averages rounding to about 2,500. With the lower fares for the younger demographic, Chula Vista aspires to see these numbers climb, ensuring the program's viability beyond its current grant funding expiration. Funding comes from both a local nonprofit, the Community Congregational Development Corp., and the Clean Mobility Options (CMO) initiative, which are known for their investments in reducing emissions, bolstering the economy, and supporting environmental advancements, especially in underserved communities through the utilization of Cap-and-Trade dollar investments.

Meanwhile, Circuit, the app powering the on-demand shuttle service, has been operating in San Diego since 2016. Its entirely electric fleet serves as a first—and last-mile microtransit solution designed to make shorter commutes within communities more accessible and environmentally friendly.
