There's a new scam in town, and Cobb County District Attorney Flynn Broady is on high alert. In a recently issued warning, Broady highlighted a disturbing trend where fraudsters impersonate prosecutors from his office to swindle money from defendants and attorneys in the metro Atlanta area. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, these imposters are emailing their targets claiming they can arrange for cases to be closed and records expunged for a fee.
"Attorneys and their clients should be suspicious of emails asking for money to pay court costs and fines in exchange for closing a case and record expungement," claimed Broady in a statement, that asking for any money in such a fashion is completely outside of normal legal procedures. The crooks claim that they were acting with authority from Cobb Superior Court Judges, sounding an alarm on the new scam targeting metro Atlanta defendants and attorneys.
Official channels never hustle people out of money through email communications, especially when it's about settling legal matters. According to WSB-TV, the Cobb County DA's office stresses that prosecutors do not solicit payments via email and would not require payment as a means to close a case. The authenticity of such emails should be verified without delay before any transaction takes place.
To keep oneself shielded from these unscrupulous emails, the DA's office has proposed some precautions. Broady urged: "Please verify the authenticity of these emails before sending any payment," emphasizing the importance of being vigilant against such scams. Anyone with an ongoing case should contact their attorney or the prosecuting agency for confirmation of any communication that sounds suspicious, and the DA's office also recommends filing a report with local law enforcement should these emails land in your inbox.
