In an effort to clarify the early ballot count for the recent elections, the Cochise County Elections Department has released updated figures and an explanation for a discrepancy found on election night. According to an announcement on their website, a total of 26,471 ballots had been tabulated by 5:07 PM on August 2nd. Additional early ballots awaiting processing at the Recorder's Office numbered 172, with another 204 ballots prepared for tabulation at the Elections Department, and a substantial 1,551 early ballots dropped off on Election Day.
The update comes after an initial count on July 30th indicated only 1,281 early ballots, were mistakenly reported due to an error with the paperwork from one vote center. After a correction was made, the actual number amounted to 1,551 according to Cochise County's statement. The department assures voters that this represented an administrative oversight and that there were no lost ballots or breaches in the chain of custody.
Responding to a recently enacted statute, Cochise County has implemented a process where each vote center is required to count and report the number of unopened early ballot envelopes received on Election Day. These numbers are then publicly posted on the department's website alongside the last unofficial results reported. However, this new count does not encapsulate early ballots received by mail at the Recorder’s office or from approved drop boxes.
The Elections Department is set to release another update by midday on Monday, August 5, potentially finalizing these preliminary numbers. Their commitment to transparency in the electoral process has been underscored by providing detailed breakdowns available on the Arizona Secretary of State’s Election Information page. The citizens of Cochise County and observers of the democratic process will be awaiting this update, hoping to see the final tally of voices counted in this latest engagement with the ballot box.
