A Corpus Christi resident, Jose Valdez, 22, has received a substantial federal prison sentence following his involvement in a convenience store robbery and shooting incident. Valdez had entered a guilty plea on April 29 for his actions during an early morning robbery at a Stripes store, which resulting in a bystander being shot, as the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, U.S. District Judge David S. Morales sentenced Valdez to serve 51 months for the store robbery and an additional 120 months for the shooting, totalling a 171-month sentence. Upon completion of his prison term, Valdez is to face five years of supervised release. Testimonies from the shooting victim at the sentencing hearing illustrated the prolonged suffering and the court recognized the gravity of Valdez's crimes.

"The Stripes store is a Corpus Christi original, a place patrons can find gas, a quick snack and a clerk’s welcoming words. No one, however, should ever have to find themselves at the wrong end of a violent criminal’s gun, turning those patrons into victims," U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani stated. The events unfolded on June 29, 2023, when Valdez brandished a gun at the store clerk and demanded money. The situation escalated when he shot a man who was leaving the store, then fled.

After an investigation involving Corpus Christi Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, authorities used surveillance footage to identify Valdez as the culprit behind this and potentially other aggravated robberies in the area, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Martin was responsible for prosecuting the case. Valdez is currently awaiting transfer to an unidentified U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
