Moreover, about 70 volunteers have been trained to manage different aspects of animal emergency care, including loading, unloading, and handling large animals. These trainings are crafted not just to equip but also to ensure the safety of your animals during emergencies. Experts from the County Emergency and Animal Services departments recommend creating a disaster plan that includes all family members and pets. Key items such as a carrier, leash, adequate food and water, medications, and copies of veterinary records should be readily available.
Additionally, pet owners are cautioned against leaving their animals behind during evacuations. The uncertainty of being able to return and risks of structural damage allowing escape or harm to pets are cited as reasons to evacuate with them. "Do not wait until the last minute," advises the County of San Diego, recommending to commence evacuation earlier. For those with livestock, preparation is particularly critical, given that moving large animals can be time-consuming and requires practice.
