Dallas is bracing for a series of sweltering days ahead, with the National Weather Service forecasting sunny and hot conditions through to Monday, with temperatures expected to hover above the century mark. According to the National Weather Service, residents can anticipate a high near 102 degrees today, with the mercury set to rise as high as 105 degrees on Wednesday.
The heatwave, however, comes with an additional health concern. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued an Ozone Action Day for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The alert today cautions that atmospheric conditions are likely to quickly generate high levels of ozone air pollution. The forecast warned that this pollutant can harm residents, particularly those with respiratory issues, and advises the public to limit outdoor activities.
Throughout the alert period, the TCEQ recommends the populace take proactive measures such as sharing rides or using bicycles, eating in rather than using drive-through services, and conserving energy to help alleviate the problem. A series of clear nights with lows around 79 degrees offer little respite from the daytime heat, maintaining elevated nighttime temperatures that may not allow the ozone levels to dissipate significantly.
With the simultaneous occurrence of intense heat and heightened ozone levels, the importance of vehicle maintenance should not be underestimated. The TCEQ emphasizes, as per the National Weather Service, "keeping your vehicle properly tuned" as a key step toward mitigating ozone pollution.
