A harrowing incident occurred yesterday at North Clinton River Park in Sterling Heights, where a suspect, now in custody, attempted to abduct a 7-year-old girl. According to a FOX 2 report, the girl was with her aunt and cousin when the 23-year-old man from Shelby Township grabbed her and tried to force her into his vehicle. In a heroic struggle, the aunt fought the assailant, managing to grapple for control of the steering wheel to prevent the abduction. The 8-year-old cousin, who was also present, sustained injuries while attempting to intervene.
The Sterling Heights Police Department received a 911 call concerning the disturbance around 2:20 p.m. A quick response by a local citizen and a member of the Citizens On Patrol program led to the suspect's apprehension. The Good Samaritan reportededly pulled the suspect out of the car, subduing him until police arrived on the scene. A statement obtained by WXYZ from the police department praised the aunt, the volunteer citizen, and the officers for their swift action, crediting them with saving the girl and detaining suspect.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect was not only involved in this attempted kidnapping but was also wanted for a similar attempt earlier in the day in Clinton Township. In that incident, he allegedly tried to abduct a 15-year-old girl, who fortunately was able to fend off her attacker.
