The Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) in Central Texas celebrated the opening of their new Early College High School and P-TECH building with a ceremonial ribbon cutting this past Saturday, reported CBS Austin. Following the ribbon-cutting, DVISD hosted its annual Back-to-School Bash, delighting families with giveaways including 2,500 free backpacks for students.
As shared by acting Superintendent Jonathan Harris in a statement obtained by CBS Austin, "We have an amazing school board, as well as our district leadership that is responsive to the needs of our students." Crafting a future-focused facility, the new building poised to accommodate students in courses ranging from manufacturing to computer sciences, is part of a $284 million bond approved by voters in 2019. Meanwhile, parents, such as DVISD's Maria Flores, acknowledged the event's significance, praising the school's supportive measures for special education and the free back-to-school supplies provided.
Amidst the festivities, DVISD is reportedly grappling with a $2.8 million budgetary shortfall, as per KXAN. This financial crunch comes despite the district's efforts to prioritize its staff with a salutary 3% salary increase earlier in May, which has elevated starting teacher salaries to $59,600 annually. DVISD Board President Shaira Ramzanali highlighted the problematic funding gap, stemming from inadequate state resources, and expressed hopes of a legislative response in time for the forthcoming session.
The new P-TECH facility is designed to give students a head start by enabling them to acquire a high school diploma, Level 1 certificate, and an associate degree in applied science all before graduation – a program offering pathways into advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity. According to KXAN, this educational advancement comes at a significant moment when the district and the state must contend with the financial strain of funding high-quality public education without sufficient state contributions. Ramzanali told KXAN, "We are mandated to do things, but we are not given the funding, so we have to decide how to move forward."
Del Valle ISD, along with other districts, is preparing for the school year, which will commence on August 7th. Amid their financial challenges, the district remains committed to their community, exemplified by their concerted efforts at the Back-to-School Bash to prepare for another academic year. The opening of the P-TECH facility stands as a symbol of DVISD's dedication to equipping students with skills and qualifications that will potentially ripple through their professional lives and beyond.
