As classrooms in Del Valle resonate once again with the chatter of students returning to school, efforts by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to improve the accessibility of education through infrastructure reach their end stages. According to KXAN, TxDOT has opened the new main lanes of Highway 71 at Ross Road and Kellam Road. The construction project, spanning over three years, aims to ease the traffic for Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD), where over 11,000 students quickly are about to return.

The ribbon was cut on the new Early College High School and P-TECH building, the final project funded by the $284 million bond from 2019. DVISD celebrated this launch with a community event, marking a significant milestone for the district's educational facilities. In a statement obtained by CBS Austin, Jonathan Harris, acting superintendent for DVISD, emphasized the forward-thinking design of the new building, stating, "We embrace the diversity within our students. The idea is the creativities, as well as the career pathways we have today, as well as those that are going to be in the future, so we designed our buildings with those in mind – what we know now, and what we might know later on."

The collaborative efforts to better the circumstances for the school district rotate around not just ease of transportation but also the nurturing of academic and career aspirations. With the completion of the Highway 71 main lanes, students and families should experience a smoother commute, a factor Jeff Barker, a spokesperson for TxDOT, underlines is crucial given the area's growth. "We’ve seen tremendous growth in that area, in eastern Travis County, and then obviously that entire 71 East corridor that takes you out to Bastrop," Barker told KXAN.

While the current road improvements represent a significant stride forward, it is duly noted that Ross Road is slated for future enhancement to accommodate the undoubtedly expected influx of traffic. With the scheduled transformation into a five-lane road by early 2025, the corridor seeks to readily handle the metamorphosing community demands on infrastructure. Till then, families and educators may carefully navigate the passage, maintaining a vigilant eye for the safety of the persistent construction zones.
