A Denair man has been arrested following an armed standoff with a SWAT team, as reported by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office. The incident started yesterday afternoon, August 12, when neighbors reported a motorcycle ablaze and a domestic dispute between the homeowner and his wife in the 2900 block of Salluce Drive.
Firefighters and patrol deputies responded to the emergency call, with the firefighters quickly extinguishing the motorcycle fire. The situation escalated when the homeowner, identified as 59-year-old Hurshel Vernon Myers, brandished a firearm and threatened first responders. The woman was safely removed from the scene, while Myers barricaded himself inside the residence, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office post.
Authorities secured the area and commenced negotiations, though interaction with Myers was described as sporadic and challenging. A search and arrest warrant was obtained and authorization came from a local superior court judge, allowing deputies to act on charges including felony criminal threats and the obstruction of executive/peace officers.
The standoff concluded at 6:37 p.m., as Myers emerged from the house, initially not complying with SWAT and patrol deputy commands. A struggle took place near the armored truck, where K-9 "Renzo" was deployed to assist in detaining Myers. Following the arrest, he was hospitalized for injuries from the dog bite. "Myers faces all of the previously mentioned charges once he is discharged," and will be held on a $150,000 bond, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office detailed on their Facebook post.
In the aftermath of the incident, investigators seized seventeen firearms and a significant stockpile of ammunition under the search warrant. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported among law enforcement or bystanders during the ordeal. The Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the efficient response and management of the situation, which avoided any further escalation of the event.
All parties involved are reminded that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The seized items will likely be used as evidence in the upcoming legal proceedings against Myers.
