An armed standoff in East Los Angeles on Monday forced numerous families to leave their homes, as SWAT teams from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) responded to a man who had barricaded himself after a domestic incident. NBC Los Angeles reports that the situation began at approximately 3:45 p.m. when deputies arrived at the 4700 block of Dozier Street in response to a call of a domestic situation.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the suspect, a male adult whose name has not been released, allegedly threatened a woman with a gun before barricading himself in his mother's house. Deputies evacuated nearby homes around 5:00 p.m. for public safety but as of 11:00 p.m., families were still displaced, waiting to return. The nature of the relationship between the man and the victim, or whether there was one at all, was not specified by LASD.
The department's Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were deployed to the scene to establish tactical command and initiate contact with the suspect in hopes of a peaceful resolution. LASD Nixle alerts released a brief outline of the events, but detailed information regarding the incident remained scarce.
Community members with knowledge about the ongoing incident have been urged to reach out to the LASD. "Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's East Los Angeles Station," says the official LASD statement. The statement also provides contact options for anonymous tips through "Crime Stoppers" and encourages individuals to sign up for direct updates from the Sheriff's Department through Nixle.
