Initial reports mistakenly suggested that the ablaze debris were remnants of structures that had been demolished earlier the same day. However, it was later clarified that the debris in question had accumulated over recent months from previously bulldozed buildings, with plans to finally clear them away today. Efforts to swiftly control and extinguish the fire required nearby streets, including St. John St. and St. James St., to be temporarily closed to traffic, to prevent from exacerbating the congestion and ensuring the safety of the operational teams.
No injuries were reported in relation to the fire. Nevertheless, there was a prompt evacuation of an occupied residence adjacent to the pile, primarily as a precautionary measure. This ensured that those living within the potentially affected area remained out of harm's way while firefighters battled the fire.
An update from the SJFD confirmed that the evacuated residence sustained "moderate external damage," thankfully with no internal damage, which will allow the displaced inhabitants to soon return to their home.
