The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) ushered in a new era of leadership with Commissioner Dan Hord, who attended his inaugural meeting at the DPS Headquarters in Austin, as reported by the department's official news release. Hord is taking over the reins from outgoing Commissioner Dale Wainwright, who concluded his term of service earlier this year.
In a transition that underscores the ever-evolving landscape of public safety in Texas, PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach welcomed Hord with optimism for the path ahead. He said, “Dan Hord is a strong leader who will be a solid addition to the Commission, and I look forward to working together in our shared mission of making the Lone Star State safer for everyone.” Outgoing Wainwright's service was also acknowledged with Mach adding, “There is no doubt the future of Texas is brighter because of it.”
Hord's entrance to the DPS structure is met with responsibility and the ambition to maintain and heighten the safety standards within the state., “The Public Safety Commission plays a critical role in the safety and security of Texans by guiding the success of the Texas Department of Public Safety,” Hord affirmed, echoing the values and goals that his predecessors and colleagues have shaped and strived for.
DPS Director Steven McCraw echoed the sentiments by expressing confidence in Hord's appointment and acknowledging Wainwright's legacy, “Commissioner Hord’s experience and keen interest in the mission, vision and values of this agency will be a huge asset to the Commission as they guide the men and women of DPS into an even brighter future,” he said. Adding to that sentiment, Wainwright reflected on his tenure with pride and gratitude, “During my time on the Public Safety Commission, I’m proud of the strides our state made in enhancing public safety for every Texan—we’ve come a long way,” Wainwright mentioned. He also expressed his thanks to Governor Abbott and his colleagues for their commitment to public safety.
Commissioner Hord, a partner at various Midland-based investment firms and a graduate with multiple degrees from Baylor, will serve on the Public Safety Commission until January 1, 2030. His diverse background in business and service on boards like the Baylor Board of Regents and the Scharbauer Foundation underscores the multidimensional perspective he brings to the DPS.
