East Portland's Lents neighborhood became the center of a significant animal welfare operation as authorities seized 15 neglected animals from a residence. The animals, consisting of 13 dogs and 2 cats, were reportedly suffering in a dire state of malnutrition and inhabiting hazardous living conditions. The intervention was led by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office in a combined effort with local law enforcement and animal welfare organizations.

In response to community complaints, prosecutors with the Multnomah County District Attorney Access Attorney Program (MAAP) acted in coordination with the Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) East Precinct Neighborhood Response Team that were surrounded by filth and showing signs of significant neglect. Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced the successful execution of a warrant to remove the animals from these egregious conditions. The seizure was carried out with the assistance of Multnomah County Animal Services and The Oregon Humane Society.

Authorities are still investigating and ask the public to share any information that might help with the case. Anyone with concerns about animal neglect in Lents should contact PPB or email [email protected] with the subject "Lents Animal Neglect Concerns."

MCDA thanks the East Neighborhood Response Team, Multnomah County Animal Services, the Oregon Humane Society, and the concerned citizens who saved the lives of many animals.
